Educating yourself with evidence-based nutrition information and breaking free of the lies you’ve been told.
Reestablishing a healthy relationship with food, and with your body.
Learning what works for your body, and that what works for Jack or Jill may not be what works for you.
No longer assuming that your complex body can be simplified to a math equation of calories in and calories out.
No longer depriving yourself of the nutrients it needs to have the most energy and brain power, and instead, learning to fuel with quality protein, healthy fats and nutrient-dense carbohydrates.
Questioning everything. As Mark Twain put it so eloquently, “The problem with common sense is that it is not too common.”
Getting as far away from the SAD (Standard American Diet) as you can, even when that means taking extra time to plan and pack your meals and snacks.
Acknowledging that less than 5%of food advertisements are for real food.
Not falling for the advertisements and marketing campaigns put out there by big food companies who are begging you to buy their “fake food” products.
Being on the defense, being aware and not falling for old, outdated nutritional myths like “low-fat is good for you” and “cholesterol is bad for you.”
This process, I call “unbrainwashing.”
Nutrition is not low-fat. It’s not low-calorie. It’s not being hungry and feeling deprived. It’s nourishing your body with real, whole foods so that you are consistently satisfied and energized to live life to the fullest. After all, isn’t that what this life is about?
I specifically chose this photo for this post because it has personal meaning to me in terms of having a relationship with your body. It’s easy to be out of tune with our bodies and minds after stressing over calories and grams of fat for so many years. I refresh my mind, body and spirit by spending time outdoors, and going running — a way that I personally like to connect with my body. I have learned to listen to, honor and respect my body. And would love to help you do that too, in our personal coaching program!

Love this post, Cassie. So much of what we’ve been told is wrong. Realising that about food, and then starting to question other things as a result, has been the most liberating part of this real food journey.
